Not every development project needs a separate audit. If the requirements and the limits of the existing system are already clear, planning can start. We suggest an assessment when it is still unclear what causes the problem, or how a change would affect your other systems.
For a smaller company, an IT audit and the recommendations that go with it are usually ready in 1-2 weeks. A more complex assessment covering several systems, with a detailed specification, can take 3-4 weeks. We give you the exact deadline in the consultation, once the scope is clear.
In an IT audit we examine your existing systems and how they are used, then recommend the changes needed. System design sets out how the new system should be built and how it should work. Design needs an understanding of how things work today; assessing this can be part of the engagement.
It is worth putting the task in writing even if you already have a developer. A short task description may be enough for a small change; a larger development project needs a detailed specification. We agree the requirements and the acceptance criteria with both you and your developer.
